Mike grew up in Marion, Virginia as a member of Christ Episcopal Church and later attended Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He then graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1969 and was employed by the Smyth County School System for 33 years. Mike spent his life teaching others on the basketball court, on the golf course, and in his classroom. He was a loyal friend to many. He recognized and appreciated the value that each one brought to his life. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Smythe of Marion, Virginia; his father, Dating marion va C. Smythe of Reading, Pennsylvania; one sister, Patricia Smythe and husband, Robert Scott Nase of Reading, Pennsylvania; niece, Susan Nase Mitchell and husband James and nephew, Philip Scott Nase and Fiancée, Marcy Raiser also survive.
